So, when should all new cars sold be EVs?

Ok, cars and trucks would be more environmentally friendly if they will be Electric Vehicles (EV). So, when should all new cars sold be EVs?

We know that California has made up its mind already: California BANS the sale of NEW gasoline powered cars in 2035 & beyond.

So, when will you buy an EV?

And, what do we do about the poor?

 

Electric vehicles and the batteries that power them must be improved before Joe Average income will get really interested in them. The battery cost and life cycle as well as more rapid charging all need to be improved. But indications are that all of these are in the very near future.

I had not heard about all that taking place "in the very near future". There are some nearly insurmountable problems with batteries. The major problem is charging. I have considerable experience with batteries and rapid charging introduces some problems that are not going to be changed in the near future, if at all.

Batteries which take four hours or more to be discharged, in order to charge them in say fifteen minutes or less, they will have to be charged at a rate of at least sixteen times that required to be discharged. That generates an inordinate amount of heat.

They have suggested changing batteries during trips, that would require a crew of people in each "filling station" be available to make that change plus having the correct batteries on hand for varying kinds of vehicles. All of this will be especially difficult when it comes to large trucks.

 

Remember the Hindenburg? Hydrogen has its own very special problems. They use gases with very low molecular weights for leak checking pressure vessels.. Hydrogen has the lowest molecular weight possible and just containing it is difficult.

 

The same thing we did when a new car cost less than 2K in the1950's, nothing.

 

They supposedly have solid state batteries which can be fully recharged in a few minutes that remain 80% effective throughout their million mile life.

 

The newest Tesla just introduced is advertised with a driving range over 500 miles on a full charge.

 

And there are problems with them. They tend to get metallic crystals during charging which can cause catastrophic explosions.

 

Think of the number of charging stations that will be needed. Every known parking space will need a parking meter looking appliance that will take credit cards. That's a lot of pavement/asphalt breaking up to get everything up and running. Sounds like a lot of job opportunities.

 

There is a Swiss company now working on a wet cell battery system, which unlike the current Tesla batteries which have spontaneously erupted in flames several times, cannot catch fire and have far better charging and distance criteria. There are a LOT of companies working to try to come up with better battery life and charging ability and range at lower costs than currently exist. Tesla is doing it in China with a Chinese partner whatever technology improvements they come up with will be seen in China first because they buy the most EV's.

 

Cannot catch fire? I seriously doubt that. You are putting the equivalent of a tank of gasoline into a battery where they are running a substantial current through it. It is a disaster waiting to happen.

 

They don't build up the kind of heat that the current Tesla batteries do. Tesla is currently actively working to improve their batteries in China with their Chinese battery partner.

 

Once they can be sold for under 20k for a 5 seater and a compact SUV can be sold for around 25k. We have a long way to go for the infrastructure to catch up and cost to come Waaaaaaay down. They are still luxury cars. Dems have to think of the little people or they can just be forced to eat their cake and take public transportation like the plebes that they are.

 

Very few gas powered cars are sold for under 20K nowadays.

 

If Democrats were smart, they'd envision a future where gas and battery vehicles shared the road, since it's about emission reduction not emission elimination. Unfortunately, we haven't had a smart democratic president or party since Kennedy so this is what we get: Insanity.

That's the pipedream, not the reality. The way this is going, it's like Prohibition in the 20's. I believe that my approach is better for the country to adapt to new technological advances

 

They will share the road between now and 2035 and beyond until the last gas powered car is taken off the road and all the gas stations are gone.

 

China will be all EV's before we are.

 

Batteries have internal resistance. You charge them at high rates and they generate more heat. There are some exceptions to this, but lithium batteries are not among those exceptions. And even some of those which do not heat up during charging, will also heat up during high rate charging. It is simple thermodynamics and there is no way to get around it.

 

I think EVs are great. However, they are not a solve all problems design. It is a problem with government in general. They will latch onto an idea and then think they have a universal solution to all problems.

 

So? China kills people who criticize the govt and most of the population works in sweatshops. And they released a pandemic on the world. You want to be more like them?

There is no race to be first in EVs because it doesn’t matter. EVs will be the most desired car when the free market makes them affordable for the majority.
