Your post illustrates my point. Like your Bible says. Strike them with a rod, they won't die. Apparently 13 years of age, is your threshold for punching a child in the face. The Bible says to beat your children and your slaves. And this is apparently OK to you people.

I think I struck a little too close to home didn't I. Do you have children that you consider to be little robots? You people always talk about how you God allows free will, but yet your children can't exercise free will when it comes to Christian fairy tales. I think many of you would deny adults, i.e., society, free will if you could.

So I was ungrateful because I thought stories like Noah's ark, Tower of Babel were BS and didn't want to genuflect to an invisible man in the sky. Teaching children to believe in Noah's Arc, believe the world is 5-6 thousand years old, and flat, etc. certainly is brainwashing.

Don't kid yourself. The Christian religion which clearly started as a cult uses brainwashing techniques just like any other cult. For example, mindlessly repeating things like the following as a group is a brainwashing technique/mind control technique.

    We believe in one God,
    the Father, the Almighty,
    maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
    the only Son of God,
    eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, light from light,
    true God from true God,
    begotten, not made,
    etc. etc.

A video on the brainwashing technique mentioned above.

Continuous repetition of mantra is one form of mind control - a small part - keeping the adherent attentive. The Noah's ark and similar stories are not though.. unless those stories contribute to the "fear factor" and/or apocaliptic narrative.

Techniques have been fine tuned over the years .. and are quite sophisticated. You tell the young-uns that if they "Question" .or "disbelieve" certain tenets from said Holy Book - the worst thing the mind can imagine will happen to them .. Horrific torture in the afterlife .. not just for a day or two .. but for eternity ..

The little fear nugget lodges deep in the subconscious .. when adherent comes across information conflicting with "tenet" a subconscious fear response is triggered .. the adherent tries to avoid the bad thought - as that might lead to the bad place.

and you have seen this play-out .. "Thought Stopping Technique" - the adherent will jump through the most twisted of mental hoops to avoid the "Bad Thought"

The smart cult leader paints a black vs white - good vs evil - God vs Devil paradigm. .. Cult doctrine "Good" - anything or anyone in confict "Evil" - Adherents are taught to demonize "the Other" - Ad Hom - rather than address the argument..

This is part of ramping up the fear factor - where the apocalyptic narrative comes in.. complete with 40 virgins for martyrdom in the fight against Satan . . who is right here .. right now .. trying to influence you .. around every corner trying to trick you.

was very short attempt at sumarizing .. hope some of the above was intelligible - studied cult mind control a bit - as had a close friend who was Abducted.

When I speak in tongues it generally devolves into Italian (not my first language but the one I heard native speakers speak in often long ago) and I could translate it if I had to.

Speaker in tongues? That's a unique venue. How do they fit the speaker and audience inside a tongue?

My first church after conversion was full of Italians, Italian Americans and Americans being raised by Italians and Italian Americans. (That's 3 generations properly defined.) They older people prayed aloud in Italian sometimes and many of all 3 generations spoke in tongues sometimes.
    I learned Italian.
So when I speak in tongues it usually goes this way.
I stand with arms raised. My right arm starts trembling. My silent prayers in English transition to a language I don't know. I'm sure a fast stenographer could type the language. It has order and progression.
Then I tremble more and more and sometimes fall or sit quickly to avoid falling.
The language subsides in speed and transitions to praising God in Italian:
Gloria tuo nome, nostra salvatore. Grazia Jesu Cristo.
Then I stop trembling and subside to silent prayer in English.

Not much different than voodoo or numerous other similar rituals practiced by various religions. This is a human phenominon - not a supernatural one.

I remember the time when a close relative of mine had to mediate between two factions in a Pentacostal Church - Two folk "speaking in tongues" recieved messages from the "Holy Spirit" on the same topic .. but contradicted each other .. causing the church to split along the two sides.

Eventually this Church was kicked out of the parent denomination.

Have you ever heard of the laying on of hands for the purpose of healing the sick and the afflicted? Pretty mainstream. The Apostles in the Bible did this. Jesus did this.

Well that's not true. Pentecostal and those denominations that speak in tongues are within the mainstream. I accidently visited one when when I was searching for a church. An interesting experience not for me. But I totally respected the members. Out of mainstream churches are those churches that don't hold the the biblical truths and beat to their own bible.

Stop with this nonsense .. Orthodox - Catholic - and in Protestantism - Lutheran - Anglican - and all other non fundamentalist denominations do not do this stuff. It is only the fundamentalist evangelicals - Pentacostals for the most part ... occasionally you will have a church from the mainstream denominations go off the ranch.

In one case that I know of personally as a relative mediated the affair .. was a Lutheran Church that had gone pentecostal .. two folks speaking in tongues came to contradictory conclusions on the same question and the church was divided .. my relative went into mediate.

Eventually the Church was booted from the Missouri Synod .. That kind of stuff is regarded as heretical by the mainstream - usurping the position of the logos.

Sorry - they are not within the "Mainstream" Orthodox doesn't do it - Catholic doesn't do it - and this is a majority of Christianity already.

Most of Protestantism doesn't do it .. Lutheran - Anglican and so on.. only the fundamentalists mostly evangelical/pentecostal

occasionally you will have a church from the mainstream denominations go off the ranch.

Your examples also suggest that k -12 and college and universities are brainwashing organizations. Forcing children to believe they are evolved apes with pictures of embryos and other teaching techniques lies about this. The point I'm making is whose responsibility is it to teach children? The parents or the State? I look at it this way. My children and now my grandchildren get one day per week to learn about God and this side of life. 5 days of BS from the Leftist Education system. And, maybe a couple of hours on one day do they get Godly teachings. The BS of Leftist Education they even have homework. When my children became of age, they have lived their lives the way they see fit. Not all have followed Christ's teachings. So, it's possible to teach and train in the ways of God without brainwashing. Again, I think many children are very ungrateful concerning the efforts of their parents. They should take the teachings of Christ about forgiveness and love.

Prove it. Where is your proof that Catholics and Protestantism and their offshoots don't apply the laying on of hands for healing the sick and afflicted. Jesus even told his Apostles that they would be able to do this and must.

What a joke of a post "Prove it" .. followed by a claim that I did not make - get an argument that is not a strawman. I stated clearly you have churches in the mainstream going rogue from time to time.

"The Lutheran tradition, including its major denominations, doesn’t believe in speaking in tongues."

    1. To some extent K-12 and colleges do brainwash. Particularly with respect to hating America, hating white people, nonsensical gender studies, etc. But they also teach real science, math, English, and so forth.

    2. Parents have a responsibility to teach their children but society has a responsibility to ensure they are not abused. I believe that with respect to certain cults, children are abused and society has to step in.

    3. Likewise with kids going their own way. One of mine is a fundamentalist Christian.

    4. Forgiveness with respect to child abuse is something that I probably cannot have a good conversation with you about, unless you were also subject to some degree of abuse.

Is he/she a member of one of the speaking in tongues churchs - and do you ever go to church with them - and how do you feel about this :)

My oldest son goes to an independent church. Being in the military he moves around so the churches are different. I know he believes in a literal interpretation of the Bible. As to how I feel, I am accepting, but don't hold back in debating issues with him.

Interesting situation .. had a close friend of mine "abducted" into a cult . or what I call a cult - is a fundamentalist pentacostal group. Not saying that all fundamentalist pentacostal churches would I call a cult - but this one was.. what distinguishes one from the other "destructive vs non destructive" cult can be found in Steve Hassan's book which I read .. Combatting cult mind control https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_Hassan

I tried .. but failed miserably - this is like an experts only arena - exit counciling .. that was many years ago .. still have contact with my friend albeit sparse .. still in the group - and doing fine in his life .. .. so while perhaps this one uses some sophisticated techniques - the ends are not destructive.. but still .. arrrrgggg .. anyway .. remember having a convo about alcohol .. saying "look right here .. in the Bible it says to drink and have fun" -numbers I believe .. as in the water into wine affair he responded "that was grape juice"

That was long ago .. now I would do things differently having studied this issue at length .. and is one of the reasons I come on religious threads .. an experiment of sorts.

You should check out the above is a very excellent and mind blowing book ..

You questioned my statement about healing the sick and afflicted with the laying on of hands and asked me to prove it. You don't know what you wrote. Okay...Happens. You moved the goal posts. Not me. Now you are back at speaking in tongues in which many churches don't believe in with the gibberish. Doesn't mean they don't believe in speaking in tongues. What those you call mainstream believe in understanding through the spirit people who speak another language, like Spanish or Russian. The spirit and talent of speaking or understanding different tongues (languages) means I know what they are saying and feel the testimony of the holy ghost. Pentacostal's think it's letting your mind be taken over by the spirit and communicate through an unknown heavenly language. And, I agree it's false. But, why condemn them? Who are you to condemn them? If it makes people feel better about themselves and others, so what? People want to give money, what is it of yours to question them and call them suckers? I'm sure you and I both waste a lot more money every month than they do on their religion. It's not a waste to them. It's amazing how liberals condemn anyone who says a woman has a right to kill an unborn baby but she doesn't have the right to give money to her church because of something you don't like. Is that about right?

I did not ask you to prove your claim .. just back it up .. an effort which you hopelessly failed ..

The vast majority of Christian Churches do not speak in tongues - a statment of fact .. none of the lutheran Churches I have been to.. cept the one that went off the farm .. speak in tongues .. and have been to many many many .. and know personally the district president .. having authority to hire and fire ministers over a large swath of the US - of the Missouri synod.

You have no clue what you are talking about.. expecially since we are talking all of Christianity .. not the US which does have a large percentage of fundamentalist pentacostals - evangelicals .. collectively known as the Religious Right.

Why I condemn these people is because they want to force their religious beliefs on others through Law - same reason I condemn Islamists.

Not a fan of Sharia/Theocracy .. Christian, Muslim or otherwise.

    1. I would disagree with math, science, English... Common Core is an abysmal destruction of mathematics. Science books and educators are all in on man-made climate change which is nonsense. They teach we can control the sun which is 99% of the reason for climate changes. And, the WOK have taken over English and the words we can use. On the Survivor TV show, the stupid MC just abolished the use of "guys" on the show because it's gender abusive. They ban books now too.
    2. Who are "certain cults?" Yes, there are laws restricting what churches can do for disciplining their members including children. They cannot put them in jail. They cannot cut off fingers for stealing. They can't beat them. They can't kill them. But, they can disfellowship and excommunicate them. Just like any private organization can do. But, teaching them to love the Lord is not abuse. Spanking kids if they severely misbehave in church certainly should be an option. Heck, old school was a paddle with holes in it. I got the holes a couple of times in P.E. Didn't take long for kids to bring their P.E. clothes to school. Or nuns who would use rulers and whack hands with them. There were teachers back in the day that would manhandle kids as well. Today, the WOK weak crowd gasps at any of that. But, I digress. Yes, it's not a good thing to get physical with your children because they won't believe the same as you. But, the children still should respect their parents and honor them as long as they live under their roof.
    3. Yep, kids will do and say the darnest things. All you can do is love them.
    4. You'll never have peace in your life if you don't forgive what your parents did and move on. As long as you didn't follow in their footsteps and abused your own, then move on. But, you can't until you forgive them. They will always continue to control your thoughts and happiness. Give it to the Lord as he atoned for all our sins. Molestations are often committed by someone who was molested. I've seen it in my wife's family. One generation to the next. It finally ended with the last being gay. No children. And, he hasn't molested anyone else. It can be stopped. But, one has to forgive the perpetrator.

I have no problem with any religious person of any religion addressing what they feel is right and wrong. They have the right to propose into law what they believe will be good for the community, state or country. It's up to the people to vote for the acceptance of those proposals. That's how laws are made which include the non-religious evildoers. One comes to mind just yesterday when Pelosi and their Democrat House voted to have no restrictions on abortion. None. Whether the Senate or Biden will agree is another matter. But, everyone has a right to propose laws. We don't have to accept all their proposals such as Sharia law. As long as the people are voting and the elections are without corruption (Democrats always are) then all opinions, beliefs... should be able to be on the table. Unless you want a Communist dictatorship or a Theocracy?

You are the one shilling for theocracy here ... building a big strawman to try and spread the blame around as misery loves company.

Never claimed religious folks do not have a right to vote ot make law .. but with that right comes responsibility - and you think making law on the basis of religious belief is "A-OK" forcing religious belief on others through physical violence "A-OK"

    I do not.
