I have NEVER bought a car that was not made in Australia, hey this is my land, the people who work there are Australians. Looks like the Ford I have will have to last me the rest of my life, but then it IS A FORD so it will.
Mate, I had two Falcons, which I really liked. The sad thing is that both Holden and Ford didn't renew themselves as other manufacturers did. For some reason GM and Ford US didn't allow or didn't want them to allow to progress as let say Ford Europe or Opel. But hey, that is politics I believe. And our government, both left and right, did nothing to intervene (except for putting money in it, instead of coupling this investment with the demand for more modern designs). Regards

Just got to constantly laugh at dumbarse, backward Australians who always believe the parasites they vote into power. The parasite politicians keep saying that Australia doesn't have the population size to warrant owning its own car manufacturing operation, and now they say the population is too small to have any car manufacturing at all in the country, and the intellectually backward citizens just go - BAR, BAR, BAR, and believe them. Its constantly amusing to watch how intellectually stupid Australians keep getting. Unfortunately, these Australian dumbarses have not looked at Sweden, who has a similar population size to Australia, and the Swedish people own two car manufacturing companies and a jet manufacturing company; all doing financially well. But hey, Australians are just too dumb and backward to own anything - maybe a lack of intellect is the reason why Australians only sell, and never build or manufacture.
Holden did renew itself, the current model is quite a step up from the previous. Ford let the side down by dragging out boring stuff no-one really wanted outside of its existing ans.... and Ford pulling out under the ALP was the nail in the coffin for the industry.
I was wondering how you would get a jibe in at the ALP. My god Australia would be a perfect utopia if there were only the Libs aye?
Yep they caught up to Ford. Mate a few years back Holden were just releasing IRS, Ford had it for years. Look at what Ford has done for the automotive industry, just about everything.
One really has to laugh... Holden renewed itself??? Ford renewed itself??? Government stopped the car manufactures from advancing themselves??? Surely, people are not serious about this when they come up with these comments??? Holden, If it could be said, renewed itself when the ALP introduced regulations for the car manufacturing industry to use interchangeable parts in their cars. This saw deals for Ford, Nissan Holden Toyota Mazda to rebadge certain models to meet those regulations. Holden introduced the VN commodore (or to be precise, the remanufactured Opel for the Australian market). Ford doggedly hung onto the falcon (which IS Australia's only real designed car) which has seen the door swinging since 1962. I note nobody has mentioned Toyota in the Australian mix, is that because they were producing Hybrid cars in Australia??? We could go on about the history of car manufacturing in Australia and blame either side of politics for the failure of the industry. BUT if one was serious about loss of the industry, they would be aware of several factors. First one of the very reason was under ALP Keating did introduce manufacturing regulations (which was international) to reduce the costs to manufacture but provided opportunity for the industry progress. They did not. Second, Australia cannot support car manufacturing on its own. That is to say, Holden for example needed to produce and sell a minimum of 18,000 export units to break even. If you consider that Australian industry has been short on quality in comparison, it could be understood why the continued struggle. Also, as costs increase the need to meet higher export quotas, as the units limits was from 1990s. Third, Extremely poor management which refused to entertain the economic conditions of varying markets and refusal to accept that the industry itself reacts to poor market factors. Management that believed it was bullet proof due to government interventions took no consideration that poor market outcomes being supported by government welfare would become unsustainable as the particular market interest moves away from that sector of the market. Basically, IF you want to blame any government for the demise of the car manufacturing industry in Australia, then there is a considerable lack of understanding of how business works. Also, clearly there is indication of lack of understanding of what government is for. Government is NOT in place to tell business or people HOW to do business or WHAT they should be doing. Government is not responsible for poor management or poor business decisions. So attempting to blame them for such is simply demonstration of ignorance of people
