I ask you again what are these TWO car companies the Swedish own??? As I have already pointed out, the Chinese own Volvo and Saab has collapsed. Do you also consider the Saab Airo as the Jet manufacturer??? Sure sounds like they are doing financially well…

So tell us all, IF these companies (supposedly owned by Swedish people) are doing so financially well, why is it the Chinese own Volvo and Saab collapsed because the previous owner (General Motors) would not release confidential rights to manufacturing of the Saab company so China could commence manufacturing the Saab brand???

As it is NOT clear the Jet manufacture you claim is also owned by Swedish people, I don’t see how we could clear that connection up. BUT to point out one glaringly obvious issue, these companies are surviving on Government grants and have been sold several times over last few decades, I think perhaps your belief of how great these companies are doing is clearly flawed by the fact you do not even know who owns them and where they manufacture…

4 January 2016 - The US justice department is suing Volkswagen over the emissions scandal that saw the German car giant fit software in millions of cars to cheat emissions tests.

In September last year, following an investigation by US regulators, VW admitted fitting the so-called defeat device on 11 million vehicles globally. The scandal has hit sales of VWs worldwide. The company has put aside billions of euros to deal with the fallout.

The lawsuit, on behalf of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), was filed on Monday in a federal court in Detroit, Michigan. "The complaint alleges that nearly 600,000 diesel engine vehicles had illegal defeat devices installed that impair their emission control systems and cause emissions to exceed EPA's standards, resulting in harmful air pollution," the filing said.

It also alleges that VW "violated" clean air laws by selling cars that were different in design from those originally cleared for sale by the EPA. "With today's filing, we take an important step to protect public health by seeking to hold Volkswagen accountable for any unlawful air pollution, setting us on a path to resolution," said assistant administrator Cynthia Giles for the EPA's Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance. "So far, recall discussions with the company have not produced an acceptable way forward. These discussions will continue in parallel with the federal court action."

The department said the filing was just the first step in "bringing Volkswagen to justice". The carmaker is also facing separate criminal charges, and a raft of class-action lawsuits filed by VW owners.

Volkswagen likely to buy back 115,000 cars in U.S: German report
Wed Jan 6, 2016 - German automaker Volkswagen AG (VOWG_p.DE) assumes it will have to buy back about 115,000 cars in the United States as a result of the emissions scandal, a newspaper reported on Thursday.

Without citing its sources, Germany's daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung said the company expected it would have to either refund the purchase price of a fifth of the diesel vehicles affected or offer a new car at a significant discount. Volkswagen expects that the rest of the vehicles will need major refits, incurring significant costs for parts and a long stay at the garage as parts of the exhaust must be reconstructed and approved, the newspaper reported. Volkswagen could not be immediately reached for comment.

On Tuesday, VW brand chief Herbert Diess said he was confident the German automaker would reach agreement with U.S regulators to bring nearly 500,000 diesel vehicles into compliance with U.S. emissions laws. In an interview with Reuters, Diess said fixing older VW cars equipped with 2.0-litre diesel engines would be more difficult than bringing more recent models into compliance. Some U.S. regulators and lawmakers have said VW may have to buy back older models. Diess did not say whether VW was discussing that, but said he was optimistic an agreement with U.S. regulators would be reached soon.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said on Wednesday that "recall discussions with the company have not produced an acceptable way forward. EPA continues to insist that VW develops effective, appropriate remedies as expeditiously as possible." The U.S. Justice Department on Monday sued Volkswagen for up to $48 billion for allegedly violating U.S. environmental laws. The Sueddeutsche Zeitung also reported that about 50 employees - including several division heads - had come forward as part of an internal amnesty program to help the company clear up the scandal.

Volkswagen has admitted it installed software in certain diesel models sold in the United States, that allowed the cars to pass government emissions tests, but then emit nearly 40 times the allowed levels of pollutants on the road. Diess said Volkswagen expected the company would be able to repair by the end of 2016 about 8.5 million diesel cars sold in Europe that did not comply with emissions standards.

Sales of VW brand cars fell 4.8% in 2015 to 5.82 million cars from 6.12 million a year earlier. Falling demand in China and US added to the losses as orders fell in December. VW has promised it will have a fix in the coming weeks for the millions of US cars with defeat devices that disguised emission levels in diesel cars. Sales began declining after the scandal came to light in September. Deliveries fell 5.3% in October, 2.4% in November and 7.9% in December compared with those months the previous year.

The underperformance at VW's largest division by sales and revenue pulled down annual group deliveries by 2% to 9.93 million cars, the first drop in 13 years, VW said. However, speaking on Wednesday, Volkswagen chief executive Herbert Diess said he was "optimistic" the company would find a solution soon. "We will bring a package together which satisfies our customers first and foremost and then also the regulators," said Mr Diess. Regulators appear been less confident. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) which uncovered the scandal, said on Monday that VW had not yet "not produced an acceptable way forward". The company will meet US regulators in Washington next week to discuss its plan.

US charges

On Monday, the US Justice Department filed a lawsuit against VW for the use of the emissions devices, which involve computer software that can detect when cars are being tested. The Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen said on Friday that the company was not cooperating with the investigation.

Volkswagen has been withholding corporate emails between executive related to the emissions scandal, using German law as the basis for the refusal. "I find it frustrating that, despite public statements professing cooperation and an expressed desire to resolve the various investigations that it faces following its calculated deception, Volkswagen is, in fact, resisting cooperation by citing German law," Mr Jepsen said in a statement.

September 16, 2015 - The rumours have been confirmed that Volkswagen is producing an electric version of the classic camper bus.

Rumours have begun to circulate about the re-emergence of the iconic VW hippy-van, a beloved road-trip staple and unparalleled adventure machine. Board member, Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neusser spilled the beans at the recent New York Auto Show that Volkswagen is in fact working on producing an electric version of the classic camper bus.

Years of sourcing VW buses from Kijiji, Craigslist and auto-trader websites have long left van enthusiasts wondering why production for the popular vehicle ever halted in the first place. The first VW camper was produced in 1950, and in the 70s, production for the iconic bus was outsourced to Brazil due to a number of changing German safety regulations. In 2013, the assembly-line was halted all together because the vehicles failed to meet a 2014 modification to Brazilian safety standards, including the requirements of ABS and multiple airbags.

However, with these requirements in mind and a vision of re-invigorating sales in the US, it looks like Volkswagen may be re-introducing the cult-classic with a modern twist of sustainability to create the ultimate form of hippy transportation. Neusser spoke to Autocar about the importance of maintaining a number of very important original hippy-bus features. First the wide, solid, D-Pillar, second the boxy design of the centre section and, thirdly, the front end must have a very short overhang. The distance from the A-pillar to the front end must be very short.

Re-launching the hippy-bus seems too good to be trueis it possible that Neusser is just getting our hopes up? Unfortunately the new electric model of the hippy-classic is still a concept car, and releasing it to the masses depends largely on manufacturing cost. As Outsideonline points out, the company has a track record of teasing hippy-bus diehards with promises of re-initiating the VW factory lines with updated versions of the classic vehicle, including the 2001 Retro Microbus and 2011 Bulli. Still, its worth noting that neither of these versions hold a candle to the original design. If Volkswagen does revive the old bus from the dead, we can only keep our fingers crossed that it maintains the original aesthetic, rather than slapping the VW logo on a Yaris and trying to make it cool, like the aforementioned 2011 concept.

Sun Jan 10, 2016 - Volkswagen AG (VOWG_p.DE) will propose to U.S. authorities a new catalytic converter system that could be fitted to about 430,000 cars capable of cheating diesel emissions tests, Chief Executive Matthias Mueller said on Sunday.

"We have one (catalytic converter) in the works and we believe that will be a part of the technical solutions," Mueller told reporters at a VW event on the eve of the Detroit auto show. Asked whether he expects the new catalytic converter to bring 430,000 rigged U.S. cars into line with emissions standards, the CEO replied: "Yes, we believe that this is possible." Mueller is meeting U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) administrator Gina McCarthy on Wednesday, where he plans to make his proposal.

Mueller expressed optimism that VW and the EPA would be able to bridge their differences. McCarthy has previously bemoaned that both sides have failed to develop "a satisfactory way forward" despite months of talks. "I think we can now offer a package that will come very close to what the EPA is expecting from us," the CEO said.Part of the proposal will be an offer by the German company to repurchase some of the affected U.S. cars, said Mueller, but declined to elaborate. Germany's Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper last week said‎ VW may need to buy back around 115,000 U.S. vehicles. "We will offer some solutions and we will see how the reaction (from the EPA) will be," said Mueller. "‎We are confident that we will find a good solution." Former Porsche CEO Mueller, who took the helm of Europe's largest automaker on Sept. 25, said he will meet "a lot of people" in Washington on Wednesday without giving names, adding that he would also be willing to testify before U.S. Congress on the emissions scandal, if asked.

Mueller, on his first visit to the United States since taking the top job at VW, cited differences between Germany's data protection code and comparable U.S. rules when asked to comment on accusations by U.S. state attorneys that VW was shielding documents from investigations. He said VW made a "huge mistake" by cheating U.S. emissions tests and any steps by the carmaker to overcome the crisis must include efforts to "better understand" the U.S. market, the world's second-largest. Asked whether he was worried about the possibility of U.S. criminal investigations, he said: "If that was the case, then yes."

7 Feb.`16 - Volkswagen will offer generous compensation packages to the roughly 600,000 U.S. owners of diesel vehicles whose emissions are over the legal limit, the head of its claims fund told a German paper.

The German car maker has still not decided whether vehicle owners will be offered cash, car buy-backs, repairs or replacement cars, Kenneth Feinberg told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung. Feinberg previously headed the compensation funds for the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, BP's Deepwater Horizon oil spill and General Motors' ignition switch crashes. On Friday, Volkswagen postponed the publication of its 2015 results and delayed its annual shareholders' meeting as it struggles to put an exact price on its emissions scandal.

More than four months after the scandal broke in the United States, Europe's leading car maker has still not won approval for a fix for any of the vehicles. Last week it named a new head of its U.S. legal department to help resolve the case. Feinberg told the paper he was unlikely to meet his goal of setting up the claims fund within 60 to 90 days, saying: "My hands are tied as long as VW and the authorities have not overcome their differences."

He said he expected an overwhelming majority to accept the eventual offer, and that VW had given him full authority to set the level. "Look at my prior cases: 97 percent of the victims of Sept. 11 accepted my offer. At GM and BP it was more than 90 percent, too. That has to be my target for VW," Feinberg said. "It is a purely business transaction, less emotional. I see that from emails I get from vehicle owners, who say things like: 'Mr. Feinberg, I know I haven't lost a relative, I just want to be treated fairly.' They are all quite reasonable."

I have a 2011 civic and 2014 Ram Quad cab 2500. They'll get sticker performance. The Ram of course must be driven carefully to do so. It's a beast of a truck and it'll show in the gas mileage if you drive it like a sports car. Driven conscientiously it will occasionally get better highway performance than the sticker suggested.

I think most drivers don't understand what great effect idling and heavy acceleration has on fuel economy. In my civic it's only a few miles per gallon. Not really worth the effort of driving carefully. The Ram is another story. On a long highway trip just getting off the highway for a restroom break is enough to skew the average mpg.
Fuel consumption statistics is interesting but in the end we drive em the way we need to at the time.

I had a 1967 Plymouth Fury, built like a tank, fuel economy was based on my not having a heavy foot, if I kept my foot off the gas, I could coast along at 30 mph, the traffic lights would change to green before I reched them, so I did not need to hit the brakes; that got me very good fuel economy.

Thu, 21 Apr 2016 - Volkswagen may outline a deal on Thursday to buy back up to 500,000 diesel cars in the US, according to reports.

The German car giant has also agreed a compensation fund for owners. VW is expected to reveal the deal to a Federal judge in San Francisco on Thursday. A VW spokeswoman, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Justice Department declined to comment. Volkswagen could also offer to repair diesel vehicles if US regulators approve a fix at a future date, reports said.

US District Judge Charles Breyer in March gave VW until Thursday "to announce a concrete proposal for getting the polluting vehicles off the road." Judge Breyer said in March the "proposal may include a vehicle buy back plan or a fix approved by the relevant regulators that allows the cars to remain on the road with certain modifications."

In September last year the Environmental Protection Agency found that VW cars being sold in the US had a "defeat device" - or software - in diesel engines that could detect when they were being tested, and change the performance to improve results.

Some models could be pumping out up to 40 times the legal limit of the pollutant nitrogen oxide. In March, Volkswagen's boss Matthias Mueller said that a deal with US authorities over its emissions scandal could take longer and cost more than expected. He warned that the 6.7bn (£5.2bn) set aside to cover the costs of the scandal might not be enough.

Apr 22 2016 - WOLFSBURG/FRANKFURT Volkswagen (VW) said on Friday it would take a 16.2-billion-euro ($18.2 billion) hit to its 2015 results and slash its dividend to help pay for its emissions-test cheating scandal.

The news came amid growing signs a regulatory clampdown in the wake of VW's (VOWG_p.DE) cheating is affecting the broader industry, with Germany-based automakers including Mercedes-Benz, and Opel - as well as VW - agreeing to recall a total of 630,000 cars to fix diesel engine technology blamed for high pollution. On Thursday, VW agreed a framework settlement with U.S. authorities to buy back or potentially fix about half a million cars fitted with illegal test-fixing software, and set up environmental and consumer compensation funds. Analysts said the deal was crucial for VW to give a cost for the scandal in its 2015 results, which have been delayed since February, and provide a starting point for Europe's biggest carmaker to try to rebuild trust with investors and customers.

VW said on Friday the money it was setting aside to pay for the scandal would drive it to a 2015 net loss of 1.36 billion euros, the largest in its history and the first on an annual basis since 1993. Full results are due on April 28. However, analysts said the Wolfsburg-based company could still face further costs, including potential U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) fines as part of an expected civil settlement, and a DoJ investigation that could lead to criminal charges.

There are also questions over whether it will offer compensation to the much larger number of diesel drivers affected outside the United States, as well as who will be blamed for the scandal in several ongoing investigations. "The crisis in Wolfsburg is far from over yet," said NordLB analyst Frank Schwope, who has a "hold" rating on VW stock. "The agreement with U.S. regulators is nothing but an intermediate step in a marathon that should stretch out over the next 5-10 years."

VW said on Friday it could not release preliminary findings from an investigation it commissioned from U.S. law firm Jones Day until it had reached an agreement with the DoJ. Chief Executive Matthias Mueller also said he could not put a figure on the total cost of the scandal -- which some analysts have estimated at about $30 billion -- but there was no reason to believe the 2015 loss would lead to job cuts.

Tue, 31 May 2016 - Volkswagen profit tumbles 20% in the first three months of 2016 as it continues to grapple with the diesel emissions scandal.

Pre-tax profit fell to 3.2bn (£2.4bn) in the first quarter, down from 3.97bn in the same period a year ago. Chief executive Matthias Mueller said he was "satisfied" with the start of "what will undoubtedly be a demanding" 2016. VW admitted last year that it installed software to cheat US emissions tests. It has already set aside more than 16bn to pay for costs arising from the scandal.

The German giant has agreed a deal with the US Department of Justice in which it will buy back and "substantially" compensate more than 500,000 American owners of its diesel cars affected by the emissions cheating. Final details are expected in June. "In the first quarter, we once again managed to limit the economic effects of the diesel issue and achieve respectable results under difficult conditions," Mr Mueller added.

Outlook

Group sales revenue fell 3.4% to 51bn in the period. VW maintained its forecast of a 5% fall in 2016 sales revenue compared with last year, "depending on economic conditions - particularly in South America and Russia - and exchange rate developments as well as against the backdrop of the diesel issue".

However, it predicted "a marked decrease in sales revenue" for 2016 for its passenger car brands, which include Audi, Seat and Skoda. "2016 will be a transitional year for Volkswagen... we remain confident that our operating business will again record solid growth this year," Mr Mueller added. VW shares fell 1.5% lower in early trading in Frankfurt.

June 18, 2016 - Volkswagen will stop producing more than 40 car models in the coming years as part of a new strategy by Europe's biggest automaker, German newspaper Handelsblatt reported on Saturday.

Volkswagen (VW) said on Thursday it would invest billions of euros in electric cars, ride-hailing and automated driving to become a world leader in green transport by 2025 as it reshapes its business following a diesel emissions scandal.

Citing company sources, Handelsblatt said the overhaul would also involve ceasing production of more than 40 models. Volkswagen currently makes about 340 car models across its portfolio, which includes brands such as Audi, Skoda and Seat.

Volkswagen 'to pay $10bn' for US emissions scandal
Thu, 23 Jun 2016 - Volkswagen agrees to pay $10.2bn (£6.9bn) to settle some claims in the US from its emissions cheating scandal, according to reports.

Most of the money would compensate 482,000 owners of two-litre diesel cars programmed to distort emissions tests. Owners could receive between $1,000 and $7,000, depending on their car's age. The agreement could still change when it is officially announced by a judge on Tuesday, sources said.

Lawyers representing car owners, Volkswagen and the US Environmental Protection Agency have not yet agreed the steps VW will take to fix the cars. The company still faces accusations over its three-litre diesel cars, as well as the prospect of hefty fines from US regulators and possible criminal charges.

'Misconduct'

Earlier this year the German company more than doubled its provisions for the scandal to 16.2bn (£12.6bn). On Wednesday VW chief executive Mr Mueller issued a fresh apology to shareholders, saying the "misconduct goes against everything that Volkswagen stands for". However, he has not put a figure on the total cost of the emissions scandal until a final deal was reached with US authorities.

Volkswagen admitted in September it had installed a "defeat device" - or software - in diesel engines in the US that could detect when they were being tested. The company subsequently revealed that more than 11 million cars worldwide were affected. Volkswagen said it was unable to comment ahead of the court's decision.

I feel for VW. Not many people know that we're crushed under Euro 5 emissions regulations. Nissan has had to discontinue their GU Patrol because it cannot meet the ever tighter standards. They only offer inferior petrols with IFS now.

Toyotas 200 series only barely scraped through and will be banned when Euro 6 comes into effect in the coming years.

Diesels will be illegal in a decade.

December 20, 2016) -- Volkswagen reached a deal that will give at least some owners of the remaining 80,000 diesel vehicles caught in the company's emissions cheating scandal the option of a buyback and provide compensation to all of them on top of any repurchase or repairs, U.S. regulators and a federal judge said Tuesday.

The $1 billion settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will give owners of 20,000 3-liter diesel cars the choice of a buyback. The figure does not include additional payments to owners. Volkswagen believes it can bring the other 60,000 vehicles into compliance with pollution regulations and will not offer a buyback if that's the case, U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer said in San Francisco. The deal includes $225 million the German automaker will contribute to an environmental fund to offset the cars' excess pollution, Cynthia Giles of the EPA said in a conference call with reporters. Additional compensation for car owners will be substantial, according to the judge, but he did not provide a figure and said the sides still had more work to do. "I am optimistic the parties will resolve the remaining issues," Breyer said, without elaborating on what was left to be done.

The settlement was a major step toward rectifying lawsuits stemming from the global scandal that erupted last year, damaging Volkswagen's reputation and hurting its sales. The company previously reached a nearly $15 billion deal for 475,000 2-liter diesel cars also programmed to cheat on emissions tests. Hinrich J. Woebcken, president and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America Inc., said the agreement announced Tuesday was part of Volkswagen's "efforts to make things right" for its customers. "We are committed to earning back the trust of all our stakeholders and thank our customers and dealers in the United States for their patience as the process moves forward," he said in a statement. The deal protects the environment "by removing the cars from road and by offsetting harmful emissions that resulted from their cheating," said Giles with the EPA.

It requires the company to buy back or terminate leases on 2009-2012 Volkswagen Touareg and Audi Q7 diesels. The EPA says it's unlikely those can be fixed to meet clean-air standards. For newer 3-liter vehicles such as the 2013-2016 Volkswagen Touareg, 2013-2015 Audi Q7, 2013-2016 Porsche Cayenne, and 2014-2016 Audi A6 quattro, A7 quattro, A8, A8L and Q5 a fix is possible, so buybacks won't be offered. Giles said the fix should be submitted soon. The new settlement appears to mirror the terms for the cars with smaller engines. The previous deal gives 2-liter owners the option to have the automaker buy back their vehicle or pay for repairs. Volkswagen also will pay those owners $5,100 to $10,000 each.

The company has agreed to spend up to $10 billion compensating those consumers. That settlement also includes $2.7 billion for unspecified environmental mitigation and $2 billion to promote zero-emissions vehicles. The settlements emerged out of lawsuits from car owners and the U.S. Department of Justice after the EPA said Volkswagen had fitted many of its cars with software to fool emissions tests. The software recognized when the cars were being tested on a treadmill and turned on pollution controls. The controls were turned off when the cars returned to the road. The EPA alleged the scheme let the cars spew up to 40 times the allowable limit of nitrogen oxide, which can cause respiratory problems in humans. The company has reached a separate $1.2 billion deal with its U.S. dealers and is still facing potentially billions more in fines and penalties and possible criminal charges.

US Charges Former VW Executive with Conspiracy
January 09, 2017 - A former Volkswagen executive has been charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States over the company's emissions-cheating scandal.

Oliver Schmidt, who was the general manager of the engineering and environmental office for VW of America, made a brief appearance in U.S. District Court in Miami on Monday following his arrest Saturday in Florida. He did not enter a plea. Schmidt, a German resident, was also charged with wire fraud and for violating the Clean Air Act.

Settlement reportedly is near

Schmidt is the second person to be arrested as part of the ongoing federal investigation into VW, which has admitted that it installed software on as many as 11 million diesel vehicles sold worldwide to circumvent emission tests. The software allowed the vehicles to turn pollution controls on during emission tests and to turn them off during actual driving. Those vehicles emitted up to 40 times the legally allowable pollution levels. U.S. prosecutors accuse Schmidt of lying to regulators who were investigating the discrepancies in emissions.

Volkswagen said in a statement Monday that it is cooperating with the U.S. Justice Department in the investigation. U.S. media is reporting the company is close to agreeing to a multi-billion-dollar fine to settle the criminal case. Another U.S. VW employee, James Liang, was charged in September with misleading regulators about the diesel emissions. He pled guilty and is cooperating with prosecutors.

The news of the latest charges come as VW is rolling out two new sport utility vehicles at the Detroit auto show. Hinrich Woebcken, VW's chief executive of the North America region, told reporters at the auto show Monday that the company was surprised by the criminal charges. He said VW is on a good path to get things straight. Many of VW's top management left the company following the scandal, including CEO Martin Winterkorn.

Jan 10,`17 -- German automaker Volkswagen AG said Tuesday that it was in "advanced talks" with United States authorities over a proposed settlement in its diesel emissions scandal under which the company would pay $4.3 billion in criminal and civil fines.

The draft settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice and U.S. Customs and Border Protection would include the appointment of an independent monitor to oversee the company's compliance and control measures for three years. A company statement issued Tuesday said that under the proposal Volkswagen would agree to "a guilty plea" to criminal law provisions. The draft needs to be approved by Volkswagen's boards and U.S. courts. Volkswagen said its management board of top executives, which includes CEO Matthias Mueller, and its board of directors would deal with the issue "in the very short term," as soon as Tuesday or Wednesday. "A final conclusion of the settlement agreement is further subject to the execution by the competent U.S. authorities and to the approval of the competent U.S. courts," the company said.

The penalties would exceed the amounts Volkswagen has set aside to cover costs from the scandal, but the specific impact on 2016 earnings "cannot be defined at present," the statement said. Volkswagen had already deducted 18.2 billion euros ($19.2 billion) from earnings to account for the expected costs of fines, settlements and recalls. The company has admitted equipping diesel cars with software that turned up emissions controls when the car was being tested, and turned them down during normal driving, improving engine performance but exceeding emission limits.

Jan 11,`17 -- The imminent criminal plea deal between Volkswagen and U.S. prosecutors in an emissions-cheating scandal could be bad news for one group of people: VW employees who had a role in the deceit or subsequent cover-up.

VW on Tuesday disclosed that it is in advanced talks to settle the criminal case by pleading guilty to unspecified charges and paying $4.3 billion in criminal and civil fines, a sum far larger than any recent case involving the auto industry. It's likely that VW will agree to cooperate in the probe, turning over documents and other information, said David M. Uhlmann, a former chief of the Justice Department's Environmental Crimes Section who is now a University of Michigan law professor. "Companies often face the dilemma of whether to protect their employees or cooperate with government investigations, but almost always end up deciding in the company's best interest to share what information they have," Uhlmann said.

Although VW's communications with lawyers may be exempt, emails between employees and company executives should help prosecutors reach as far up VW's organizational chart as the scandal went, he said. Prosecutors now have three witnesses giving them information and have arrested Oliver Schmidt, VW's former head of U.S. environmental compliance who dealt with the EPA and California Air Resources Board after the scandal was uncovered. The cooperation of witnesses and the company should help investigators determine if the scandal went beyond VW's engineers, Uhlmann said. But extraditing any executives from Germany would be a problem.
