I got a 27" Sanyo when I was 16..I'm now 33. It has literally lasted that long. Only problem is every now and then have to smack it on the side like the Fonz to get the picture to come back. Figured I might as well get a new one. Don't want to spend more than 500-600 on one. Wal-Mart has Vizios, Sanyos and Samsung there, all about 45"-47" available. I have read up about the 3 versions, know what I want and don't want on them as far as contrast ratio, outputs/inputs, etc. Here's the thing, was wondering if any of you new which company is the best lately on how long they will last? Don't want to spend 500 every few years. My old Sanyo lasted so long can't help but want to trust them, the Vizio is American company so kind of want to support them, but Samsung is the tier 1 company of the 3. Any advice appreciated.

I would have to pay that same price for a 20" sharp. I just want one a good size if I'm going to spend that much. Plus, it's got to last. Everyone I know who has gotten these new T.V.s over the last few years has to fix them within the 1st couple of years, for hundreds of dollars. I refuse to get took. If it was made in America and would last 30 years I would save and pay 1500. Better than a 1000 every 5 years between original cost and repairs. I hate globalism. Are there any T.V.s actually made in America?

I have never had any trouble with any of my sharps. I have found out if they do break down it is much cheaper to just buy a new one.

you might as well flip a coin on brand. the back-light is the part now that makes a TV cheaper to replace than repair and the last time i looked, they were all made by the same company.

my advice is to get the best resolution and highest refresh rate that you can afford...and play with the remote in the store. nothing ruins a great picture like a remote that's too complicated to be effective.

I can't afford it every couple of years. It is a paycheck, I only get 24 a year, 12 of which are consumed by rent and bills alone. I'm going to give it a shot, but if it breaks within 5 years I won't own a T.V. again.

Appreciate the advice. They all look amazing. I like football, so def want the Hz thing at 120, don't think I could afford more. A lot are still 60 and that simply isn't an option.

Go to the Best Buys web site and click on the models/size you
are interested in.Then read the Reviews.Best Buys has a Labor Day sale
    thru today.
Sylvania used to have the best picture for the money, then Sharp did.
Sony Bravia { which I bought 2 years ago } and then LG.
Plasma's are on sale.Go with a consensus on the Reviews.Forget
the really bad review { they'll always be at least one }.
Then when yo go to the store compare the TV's on display.
Or just go to Wall Mart, they're always on sale.Don't be inflexible
as I gotta have this exact model.Price is very important. But do eliminate
models that might have a history of glitches.Watch out for those models
that have glitches. That's the biggest thing.

bad time to bring up that ESPN 3D needs a 3D TV? start saving your money now. glasses-free 3D is rolling out, and by the time you need another one, the price should be down to a level you can afford.

I had found a site that had refurbished T.V.s and one was in my price range that had way more features and was 57", but had a review that scared me off of it. The other reviews were good, so maybe Ill check that out again. What do you all think of refurbished T.V.s?

My advice would be don't buy the latest gimmick.Gimmicks wear off
Be practical.Even if you gat a TV On sale in 6 months it will be cheaper.
But don't pay retail if you can help it.Don't end up with a floor model.
Know the exact model and #.Because some sets are 60 hz. and some
    120 hz.get a 1080 p set.Yer eyes can't tell the difference between a 60 or
120 hz. TV.It adjusts too quixkly.

One thing to check with LCD TVs is their ability to display subtle shades without posterization or banding. Most stores hide this common LCD flaw by playing animated features on their display TVs as animation doesn't have much in the way of subtle shading.

Last I'd heard Sony had the most success in eliminating this problem but that was a few years ago so I'm sure less expensive brands have caught up.

When shopping for an LCD check reviews of models you're interested in for their ability to deal with posterizing. Also make sure the model you buy is unpacked and turned on in the store with just a blue screen so you can check for dead pixels.

I bought a Samsung about 3 years ago. I tend to watch one particular channel (not a porn channel for those who want to get in an early quip) and the station logo has now burned into the corner of the screen.

It may not be the fault of Samsung as, having found out later, one of the settings is there to eliminate the possibility of screen burn so why it wasn't automatically incorporated into it, I have no idea.

Was it plasma? Plasma T.V.s are basically a dead technology now because of that persistent problem.

(*)(*)(*)(*). That sucks man. At least you didn't leave a game on pause, or something similar. Would have had to throw it away.

Plasma TV's also have a shelf life. You mentioned owning a TV for
    like 15 years.Plasma's won't last 15 years.They wear down the number
    of hours used.

Best buy has a Sony 40" in my price range, and Sony good company. Might just buy online. Will lose 7"s but no big deal.

if you have decent credit you can get TVs at Best Buy for 3 year no interest financing. But you better be sure you can pay in 3 years or you're (*)(*)(*)(*)ed with interest.

I'm about to get a new TV myself.

I'm going with Plasmas because they're cheapest and they have the highest refresh rate. I can get a 50" for about 700 bucks. And on 3 year financing that's not bad.

TV is still relevent. It's cable that's the dinosaur. If you're still paying for cable then you haven't heard of netflix/hulu

    Yup Plasma's a geat buy.I remember a gal back the 2nd year Plasma's
came out just had to have one.The first year they were around $9-10,ooo.
Ridiculous. She felt so proud she was the only one in her neighborhood
who had one.She also wasn't married to yer common law boyfriend and
worked as a mngr. in a video store and lived in a trailer.
I kept trying to make sense to her.Like wait. The price will drop in a
couple,3 years. Why spent all that Money. She was inflexible.
You can't tell me she doesn't feel the schmuck every time she see's
    a Plasma on sale.
