I am currently deep into a non-fiction tome titled Antigua California.

It deals with a detailed history of the Jesuits in California from late 1600s to their ouster in 1768. Absolutely amazing and I am learning things I never guessed at.

I know the forum doesn't allow advertising and, as my blog does deal with books I've published, I can't link to it here or in a signature. So, if you want to learn some goodies, I've posted a couple of items and have more to come. Send me a PM and I'll give you the link.

I really liked the part where the shaman tells the King he sees an eagle in his future. I think the TV series beats the series GoT all hollow. That show is, "realistic" or not, based largely on royalty and the idea of Divine Right. There are hereditary nobles and kings in Vikings too, but the attitude it takes to them is different.

I just finished E.B. Sledge's "With the Old Breed".
Sledge's war memoirs were among the source material for the miniseries "The Pacific".
An interesting insight into the psychology of a front-line soldier living through the horrors of Peleliu and Okinawa.

    Capital in the 21st Century
    by Thomas Piketty

Economics, based on data, lots of data, something that economists didn't have until fairly recently.
I think it's a bigger warning than the antarctic ice shelf collapse.
We are headed for some tough economic times, and we are doing almost exactly the wrong things to prepare for them.

A strangely instructional book called How to Read Books. If I could ever figure out how to read it, then I could figure out how to read it.

At the time, capitalism was competing with communism to determine which system was more fair, just and egalitarian. News from Russia was hard to find but everyone in America had a good taste of capitalism American style. Some thought that communism would work. Events proved them wrong. But as the wise man said "communism is when man exploits man, capitalism reverses it."

This tells the poignant tale of a Chinese farmer and his family in old agrarian China. The humble Wang Lung glories in the soil he works, nurturing the land as it nurtures him and his family. Nearby, the nobles of the House of Hwang consider themselves above the land and its workers; but they will soon meet their own downfall. .thanks for your click >>>http://adf.ly/pVIVG

I read this a few months ago and agree, it was very good. I've been reading through her books, some are good and some just so-so.

I was reading Raymond Chandler's "Farewell, my lovely". I've been gigging
and writing so it was removed from my "Nook". I've been trying to
read some of the James Bond novels but time hasn't been my friend.

The Slaughterhouse Five is one of my faves by Vonnegut. It definitely
deserves a place in "true classic" literature.

Busted: Corruption and Betrayal In The City of Brotherly Love by Wendy Ruderman & Barbara Laker

SENSATIONAL book dealing with police corruption in Philadelphia - a newspaper series that won a Pulitzer prize for these two valiant reporters.

City taxpayers were forced to pay $ 2 million in settlements for the victims of these police criminals. And get this - those criminals are suing the city because they are demanding $ 1 million in lost overtime payments because they were disciplined for their crimes.

As always, the taxpayers pay for the crimes of corrupt police when it should be their unions who pay the victims.
