That weapon is so old that it wins the title of current longest in service firearm.

Like I tell all the young lasses, they knew how to make a weapon in the olden days.

More soldiers would choose this as the only heavy machine gun to depend on.

Yes over a hundred years old, still current armoury. Been in service since 1921 and seen service in every theatre.
Can take out a human target at over 2kms, 5 times the muzzle pressure of a Springfield .30-06. Fires around 500 rounds a minute.

Yeah, but the MG42 sounded like ripping canvas. Just the sound of it made Allied soldiers' bowels turn to water.

I don't want to be on the wrong end of either of them. They are two different classes of weapons, not many men run around carry Ma Deuce under their arm

Under German designations the MG42 could be a heavy machine gun.

Thanks,, the cheque's in the mail :)

The eagle watches from the mountain
As the warriors turn into fools
And the dice are thrown on sacred ground
And they move closer to the truth

It's a great song and I have my own interpretation of these words. These worlds hit home for me after the American invasion of Iraq. The eagle = America ,, warriors = GW Bush and co,, sacred ground = Mesopotamia,, the truth = not finding weapons of mass destruction.

The bans (two of them) were actually, in terms of crime, non-events. They were unnecessary and quite stupid policies that were rushed through a parliament by a spooked conservative government. The first one was in response to the killings at Port Arthur in Tasmania. Tasmania had, at the time, the slackest firearms control laws in Australia. They were moved to tighten them up. But the Howard government panicked and brought in some really stupid policies. The second ban, this one on handguns, came from a shooting at a uni campus. Again, a massive overreaction. But what annoys me is is the bull(*)(*)(*)(*) that is spread about the bans, the truth is bad enough, why bother to make completely wrong claims, such as "Australia has banned firearms"? Not at all. It is not the case. And arguing about crime statistics is pointless unless you want to work through 16 years of statistics. The funny thing though about all this is that now and again a progressive will write to the newspaper with something like, "the only good policy Howard brought in was the firearms bans". They weren't good policy, they were rampantly stupid. But there is no need for the detractors to bang on about crime stats, the stupidity of the policy is evident.

Oh and while I'm at it - don't attack a whole nation based on one issue - if you're put off going to the States because of a thread in a forum, think again. If you get the chance to visit the US then do so, you will not regret it.

Well I have to agree with you but stats are all you have to argue the difference and I say there is not statistically significant difference. There are a lot of problems using these numbers to prove anything as it really is not a controlled study.

So how do you change the law? Common sense arguments do not seem to phase the gun control crowd who appear to make their decision on ignorance and emotion. Ever argue with one? It can get rowdy.

In this regard, Australia and the US are nearly identical with Australia having gone a little further than the US with the Constitution being the only wall of protection for us but the arguments, the sentiments, and the emotions are spot on the same and if the gun control crowd here could do the same, it would.

You know, freedom is not always pretty and I think Australians understand this but it is one of the most precious things we have so it takes a good fight sometimes to keep it.

I'll keep my guns. I'll take America over your country any day. Have fun being a liberal, and believing whatever makes you warm and fuzzy.

Quite frankly, America is not that safe. We have over 300 million people from all walks of life. There is certain to be problems. We have a president that is creating a huge population of entitlement folks that want more and more from Uncle Sam, and he is trying to divide and conquer us with class warfare. We had cities in America with gun bans, but had the highest murder rates in the country. States with the most liberal gun carry laws have the least amount of violent crime. Banning, confiscating guns and creating "gun free" zones has done nothing to thwart crime. I know there is less crime in Australia, but then again, you only have 23 million people.

I find Americans calling Australians liberals bloody stupid, totally meaningless in Australian vocabulary. You can throw the term around as an insult to your fellow Americans, but to Australians it means nothing.

Now go away and spread the word.

But having said this, I do enjoy a liberal sprinkling of chocolate on my cappuccino.

you live in Indiana, are you even Australian. Now I would argue that most Australians would not have our laws changed. After all anyone who has even the remotest need to have a gun can get a licence relatively easily.

I think most Australians are mortified by the USA stance on gun laws, among other things.

oops your ignorance of anything outside the good old USA is showing, the Liberals here are the conservative party, and they are the ones that made the gun laws. It had nothing to do with left or right, conservative or liberal, nothing to do with conspiracies, nothing to do with not having personal protection, even before the change very few people carried weapons.

Maybe you fellows would be a little more knowledgeable if you got off your butts and traveled.
