I agree, they are worse than nothing. Typically you get one guy who rights a well thought out, researched and supported post like "Obummer is a total moron, the worst president in history" and that will garner about 25 "like" hits from conservatives who are highly impressed by such intellectual argument.

I have to disagree. Here are my reasons:

If I like a post and feel I have nothing to add that merits saying, it's nice to have this feature. It's annoying to have to read/scroll through posts that are merely congratulatory but add nothing to the discussion.

I have also found it annoying that the reputation feature makes me "spread it around" before I can add to the same person's reputation again if I feel they're saying something that merits it.

As for the dislike feature, it allows me to express my disapproval of trolling posts without having to waste my time engaging someone who frankly doesn't merit any more attention from me than a "thumbs down". There are also situations where I don't want to give someone's idiocy the legitimacy that responding to it would provide.

If I simply disagree with someone, I will engage them without using the "dislike" feature. I generally reserve it for the situation noted above. There might be times where I'll both reply and use the "dislike" feature, if I feel a post is so disgusting that it merits using the dislike, and says something that shouldn't go unanswered.

Bottom line: I expect individuals will use the feature in different ways. I can't say that I take it very seriously, but that doesn't mean I fail to appreciate having the option.

Sure, there are people who will abuse most any feature. Which is why I said above that I won't be taking it very seriously.

I agree with this point. If there is a poster I've noticed who makes continually well-formulated arguments/posts/etc. and I want to let them know I respect their posts, the "spread it around" buffer gets in the way of that.

You bring up a valid point.

I can definitely see the merit of your disagreement with my initial reaction to this feature as well as all of the points you made regarding how the feature can be beneficial. I think one of your last comments and the post you made after this one I'm quoting sums it up best--it just shouldn't be taken incredibly seriously is all. I like your post expressing respectful and eloquent disagreement with my post so much, that I clicked on the "like" button for it. :) Cheers.

Why have the ignore feature if we can get alerts from the people we have on ignore disagreeing with all your posts? If they are on ignore its obvious I really dont care what they think, and I dont want to see their opinions flooding my notices, is there a option to turn this off?

I concur - the Ignore feature should be global in scope. If I have someone on ignore, it should be like they don't even exist to me.

I have taken a moment of thought, and had a salad with some pop chips and a diet Pepsi, and I believe I have revised my position.

Obviously this system has already and will continue to be abused, but aside from the annoying messages that I get stating who dislikes my post, I think this system will actually work out well.

You see, it seems to take the anonymity out of the pettiness and puts a face, or username, to it. It shows the world exactly how poorly some arguments are constructed, so poor that rather than actually rebut posts, all one has to do is tell the world they refuse to put together a few facts and show you to be wrong. Just a simply click of the mouse button and they have demonstrated their version of thought and research whilst the rest of the folks continue to use their heads.

So I now would like to give the new system a hearty hello. You are quickly becoming stick on name tags advertising the capabilities of those who resort to button pushing rather than thought.

This is actually a very good way to look at it. I can't disagree with your assessment.

Personally, I'd remove all features of this sort. Who really needs them?

While I'll certainly acknowledge the potential for abuse, it's not necessarily going to always be illustrative of a failure to exercise any thought or one's lacking capability. It actually takes a great deal of thoughtful restraint sometimes not to respond to the baiting, which just encourages the trolls who are not here for a thoughtful exchange, but to get their adrenaline fix from combative confrontation. Replying to them really serves no productive purpose.

You're entitled to your opinion, of both the system and those of us who will not be applying it lazily, potentially lumping us in with those who will abuse it. I'm likewise entitled to my opinion, the remainder of which I won't be sharing because while the snark of it would perhaps be amusing, I have enough respect for you to refrain. Please don't make me change my mind.

I like this a LOT more. Aside from avoiding the drama, it could actually be useful to see where people you're debating with come down on various things. Meaning that while you're replying to their post, you get a bit more information by looking at what else they clicked in the thread.

    I like the feature.

I hope they change the "quick links" page to be more like the top 20 posts/threads.

It would be good if there was some kind of limit on how many times you could like/dislike per day as well.

Couldn't you leave this drivel to the home-town folks in Hicksville? Can I switch it off? Who cares what teabags and racists dislike? It was better before.

I'm liking it because it's a quick way to acknowledge somebody's post was worth reading. Think I'd like it better if we were giving THANKS instead of likes/dislikes (too Facebooky and most people who use the dislike are just being snarky).

All in all... it works well. Thank you, owner, for the new feature. ;)

I like the feature...the "likes" are positive feedback...and the "dislikes" from lefties are positive feedback.
