The problem I foresee is that it would then become a contest where people try to get their friends to like each others' posts regardless of their quality, in order to get on the list.

I've seen this on Flickr, actually. For those unfamiliar, Flickr is a web site for sharing photos. They have a feature called "Explore", which showcases what the Flickr community has supposedly deemed to be the best photos. Flickr also has various user-created groups, some of which put in place as a condition of membership favoriting or commenting positively on each others' photos, including establishing quotas. The groups thus became vehicles for groups of friends trying to get each others' photos to appear in Explore, regardless of their overall quality. The site had to adjust its algorithm to compensate. To be fair, a lot of people on Flickr don't give a rip about the Explore feature - but especially so because of this problem.

So I expect rewarding people for having the most likes by showcasing them in some way will just exacerbate the problem of people "liking" a post for the wrong reasons.

Since it takes an act of congress to actually find the statistics, I doubt if it'll be much of a problem. Only true lefties will work that hard to find something to complain about.

Don't see an envelope underneath my likes/dislikes... but I did learn to go to Quick Links/Member Likes & Dislikes to see a list. When I wanna see it again, I can never remember exactly how I got there last time. Go figger. ADD

I suspect nothing along that line will happen at PF.

So who else has noticed that this new feature is a great tool for people who want to let you know they disagree with, or dislike what you have to say, but are unable to do so through debate?

I like this because it actually is a return to the old rep system in a way, while simultaneously keeping the new one. I mean, really the new rep system is not much other than a measure of how long you've been here. If you can be voted up, but never down, eventually you will hit the top, signifying... that you've been here for a while, collecting the good, immune to the bad. Like/dislike is really a better, more honest system, while allowing people to keep their "beyond repute"s.

Thanks for the new feature . I like the 'likes/don't like , but I sure hope you can keep the rep system as well .

Both have their function and add to the ambiance of your site in their own way.

    Thanks again

well , maybe ,but maybe not , leftleg . Much the same could also be said for the old PF way of repping a post , maybe the pre-Southpaw days were before your time here on PF , so you wouldn't remember the big blow-up concerning the rep board . OMG

anyway , people sometimes will register a like or a dislike to a post that has nothing to do with whether or not they want to debate / discuss something with you , just saying .

LOL , don't tell me that you've been Advisor for 3 months and you're already paranoid ... sheeeshhh..

I would not have even noticed if not for the annoying notification. How do I disable it? The rep thing was annoying, and so is this.

Or can't be bothered , or prefer not to waste their time with Bozos .
But does it really matter ?
Why would I want to debate with a Racist or someone who thinks Baseball is manly ? Warped souls ?

Say nothing. If you don't do anything, you can't do anything wrong. If you just go around Liking/Disliking posts and you don't actually post any kind of reply, no one can get at you or dislike your posts. You can dislike everyone's posts and you are safe as long as you don't make a post.

(that is what I'm seeing from the yella belly girly cowards....)

Gosh Viv , I sort of like the new like/dislike way of a quick way of rating a post , and I hope that the Owner keeps the old Rep system as well , , both add to the ambience of the 'New and unfolding PF' .

and while I'm at it , I'm also going to give the PF Owner / PF Staff , and especially the Mods and Advisors a little credit for sticking it out and hanging tough the last few months . . .

I've been harsh in my criticism at times , and had reason to be , as had we all . . .

Things seem to be getting better all the time , and as long as I see progress , I'll be here .

But would ya mind picking up the pace a bit ?

I like the new feature, personally.

It's simple and convenient, and a good tool to encourage civil discourse.

...I don't do the 'Dislike', but that's a personal discipline of mine. lol

LOL, they publish stats but we're not allowed to post them... go figger!

I agree with Viv... we've gotta lotta cowards running around disliking every single post, but rarely responding with anything except 'dislike'. I think it's hilarious... shows their true character.

Something else I get a kick out of... you get the same notification for a good vote that you get for a bad... so you never know until you get there which way it'll go.

All in all, I like the like/dislike feature. Quick easy way to provide feedback and you can hit the same poster multiple times when they're on a roll. Just the way it should be. ;)
