Government failure is SOP. Armed citizens are very effective by comparison. Background checks, if they worked, would only prevent a legal purchase. IOW, useless bureaucratic nonsense.
The firearm in question was purchased because the united states air force failed to forward the pertinent information to the FBI. It is not an example of a loophole, or some weak regulation, rather it is an example of the government itself failing to keep up with its own duties and obligations to the people.

The law which only requires checking the FBI's database for criminal record. In Canada, a background check can take a few months to complete for people who want to buy guns. It can involve interviewing people who know the potential buyer.

What NRA opposition prevented the democratic super majority during the first two years of the administration of Barack Obama, from implementing whatever firearm-related restrictions it so desired? They chose to ignore the will of the people when they implemented the affordable care act.
Armed citizens are basically ineffective as every mass shooting has demonstrated. And there is no evidence that having an armed population saves more lives than it costs. Like it or not the data comparing America with the rest of the first world proves that conclusively.
