Why should white people be blamed for African American's collective social status?

I don't hate white people, I hate ignorant bigots who but for the accident of birth hate all those of the "wrong color".

we were not discussing the good things that white people have done, we were specifically discussing the behaviour of the dominate white culture. An attitude of "racial and cultural" supremacy that has been displayed for well over a thousand years. White supremacy and the oppression of blacks did not end with abolition - and Jim Crow apparently is still skulking around America.

When I am crudely insulted (even in other languages) I generally first look to the source.

take a look at the states that have or are introducing "make it harder for x people to vote". I know of absolutely NO state where these new attempts are aimed at white people. By some odd co-incidence they all seem to effect black and brown people.

I know its over and many people living today suffered under that era.

Who is hanging on to it? If you don't know what was and you don't know what it is, then you are ill-prepared for what is yet to come. No one criticizes Jewish people for teaching their kids the evils of the Holocaust, but black folks are always told to forget the past as if it didn't happen. History is the most rewarding of all our subjects because History teaches you what your fathers did and what you are capable of doing. So it takes a pretty arrogant person to try and tell someone who has suffered a great atrocity to "get over it" when you yourself have never suffered under that type of oppression.

North Carolina just passed laws which disenfranchise a particular 'segment' of voters (primarily); that is indisputable in real terms. The legal battle continues.

The American people may have their biases about many different things... but the more they allow certain interests to MANIPULATE the right of people to vote, the further down the path of real tyranny this nation will go. I suspect that the GOP in North Carolina will pay a massive price for what they are doing there. It will not only affect them in the near future... but for likely 1 or 2 generations. Well I was not considered a White man in deep south Texas until I was out of the military, regardless of technical legal considerations and so I'll repeat that White litany, Blacks need to cease this wallowing in emotional angst over ancient wrongs and get on with life. If they in general care about Black communities and I see no real evidence that they actually do give a damn, then they can begin investing their OWN time and money in 'downtrodden' communities and try to convince seemingly professional victims to man up as a people and begin embracing -- oh I dunno -- middle class values. How's that?

If we are truly a post-racial society like most conservatives try to believe, why is it only successful blacks that are faced with fixing the black community? Whites should have the same obligation, no?

 

Since when are conservatives interested in stepping in to 'fix' the problems of their neighbors? Do you see achie-breakie-hearted White conservatives shrieking to the skies, "Won't somebody think about the plight of poor White trailer trash?!" No, they do not do that, because with all the opportunities afforded ALL citizens in this nation they figure that if White trash didn't want to live that way they wouldn't remain so determined to maintain that interesting lifestyle.
